Undertaking letter generator: UAE format
An undertaking letter is a signed written promise. Choose what it is for: returning company property such as a laptop or phone, a bank application, a visitor's visa, or a purpose you describe. The letter is written in the first person, ready for the person giving the undertaking to sign.

What an undertaking does and does not do
An undertaking is a written promise signed by the person who gives it. UAE labour law does not set a format for one, and signing it does not give the other side rights the law does not allow. For example, an employer can recover the cost of lost or damaged property from wages only up to five days' wage a month unless a court approves more (Article 25(1)(h)), however the undertaking is worded. Banks, immigration offices and typing centres often have their own forms, so ask first.
This tool produces templates for general guidance. It is not legal advice. Check the final wording with your HR team, and for contracts with MOHRE (600 590 000) or a UAE employment lawyer.
Frequently asked questions
What is an undertaking letter in the UAE?
A signed letter in which a person promises to do or not do something, for example to return a company laptop, to keep their salary at a bank while a loan is outstanding, or to make sure a visiting relative leaves before their visa expires.
Is an undertaking letter legally binding?
It records a promise in writing, which can be evidence of what was agreed. How far it can be enforced depends on what it says and on UAE law; it cannot give anyone more rights than the law allows. This tool does not claim any particular legal effect. For anything important, take legal advice.
Can my employer deduct the cost of unreturned property from my salary?
Only within the legal limits. Deductions to repair damage or loss caused by the worker's fault are capped at five days' wage a month unless the court approves more (Article 25(1)(h)), and all deductions together cannot exceed half the wage (Article 25(2)). Such amounts can also be deducted from end-of-service benefits under the procedures in Article 29 of the Executive Regulation.
Do I need an undertaking letter for a visit visa?
It depends on the visa and the office handling it. Some typing centres and authorities ask the sponsor for a signed undertaking; others have their own form or do not ask. Check the current requirements with ICP, GDRFA Dubai or the typing centre before you apply.
Who signs an undertaking letter?
The person giving the undertaking. You can add a witness line. Company letters, such as a salary transfer letter, are signed by an authorised signatory instead.
Do you store what I type?
No. Your details are sent to our server only to build the preview and the DOCX or PDF file, and the letter is returned straight to your browser. Nothing is saved, logged or used for anything else, and you do not need an account.
