Frequently Asked Questions
How many annual leave days am I entitled to in the UAE?
Under Article 29 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, employees with 1+ year of service are entitled to 30 calendar days of annual leave per year. Employees with less than 1 year but more than 6 months receive 2 days per month (pro-rated).
Can my employer refuse my annual leave request?
Your employer can schedule your leave based on work requirements, but they cannot deny your entitlement entirely. You must take at least 2 consecutive weeks per year if you have completed 6 months of service. Unused leave must be paid out upon termination.
How does sick leave work in the UAE?
Under Article 31, you are entitled to 90 days of sick leave per year: first 15 days at full pay, next 30 days at half pay, and remaining 45 days unpaid. A medical certificate is required for absences exceeding 2 consecutive days.
Is maternity leave paid in the UAE?
Yes. Under Article 30, female employees receive 60 days of maternity leave: 45 days at full pay and 15 days at half pay. No minimum service period is required. An additional 45 unpaid days are available if medically required.
How many days of paternity leave do fathers get?
Fathers in the private sector are entitled to 5 working days of fully paid paternity leave. This must be taken within 6 months of the child's birth. No minimum service period is required.
Are public holidays included in annual leave?
No. Official UAE public holidays that fall during your annual leave are not counted as leave days. Your leave is extended by the number of public holidays that overlap.
Can I carry forward unused annual leave?
This depends on your employer's policy. Under UAE labour law, employers can set rules for leave carry-forward. However, upon termination, any unused leave must be paid out at your basic salary rate.
What leave is available for Hajj pilgrimage?
Muslim employees are entitled to a one-time unpaid Hajj leave of up to 30 days, provided they have completed 2 years of continuous service with the employer.
