The employer may not pass recruitment or visa costs to the worker (Article 6, Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021).

What happens next

  1. The employer cancels the work permit with MOHRE. You sign the cancellation to confirm you agree and have received your dues, unless you are outside the UAE.
  2. The employer then cancels the residence visa with GDRFA Dubai. Your Emirates ID is cancelled with it.
  3. Your final pay, gratuity and unused leave are due within 14 days of the contract ending (Article 53). Check them with the settlement calculator and the gratuity calculator.
  4. If your employer ended the job, claim ILOE job-loss insurance within 30 days. You need 12 months of subscription, and you must not have resigned or been dismissed for a disciplinary reason. The claim is lost if you leave the UAE or start a new job. See the ILOE claim calculator.
  5. There is no automatic labour ban. A one-year ban applies only if you left during probation without the required notice, or a work abandonment report against you is proven.

Frequently asked questions

What is the grace period after visa cancellation in the UAE?

It depends on the visa and the emirate. GDRFA Dubai gives 60 days after a residence visa is cancelled or expires. ICP, which covers Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates, gives 180 days to golden, green and blue visa holders and their families, 90 days to skilled workers at MOHRE levels 1 to 3 and property owners, 60 days to permits issued with a guarantor or host, and 30 days to all other categories.

After visa cancellation, how many days can I stay in the UAE?

For an employment visa in Dubai, 60 days. In the other emirates, ICP does not say whether an employer-sponsored visa falls in its 60-day or 30-day group, so plan on 30 unless ICP confirms 60. Golden and green visa holders get 180 days. The law caps every grace period at 6 months.

What is the visa cancellation fee in Dubai?

GDRFA Dubai charges AED 100 plus AED 10 Knowledge and AED 10 Innovation fees, so AED 120. The MOHRE work permit cancellation is free online, or up to AED 72 at a business centre. The employer pays.

What is the visa cancellation fee in Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates?

ICP lists an AED 50 application fee and an AED 100 smart service fee, so AED 150. An exceptional cancellation, for example after a dispute or the sponsor's death, adds AED 100.

Who cancels the visa, me or my employer?

The employer. It cancels the work permit with MOHRE first, which you sign to confirm you agree and have received your dues, then the residence visa with GDRFA or ICP. Your Emirates ID is cancelled with the residence visa.

What happens if I stay after the grace period?

Can I claim ILOE after my visa is cancelled?
