How is overtime calculated in the UAE?
Overtime pay is calculated based on your basic hourly rate: Monthly Basic Salary ÷ 30 ÷ 8. Regular overtime is paid at 125% of this rate (25% premium), while night overtime (10pm–4am) and rest day work are paid at 150% (50% premium).
What is the maximum overtime allowed per day?
Under Article 19 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, an employee cannot be asked to work more than 2 hours of overtime per day, unless the work is necessary to prevent a substantial loss or serious accident.
What are normal working hours in the UAE?
Normal working hours are 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. During Ramadan, working hours are reduced to 6 hours per day for Muslim employees. Some industries (hospitality, retail) may have different schedules.
What is the overtime rate for night work?
Overtime work performed between 10pm and 4am is paid at 150% of the basic hourly rate (a 50% premium). This is higher than the regular overtime rate of 125%.
What about working on Fridays or rest days?
If you work on your designated rest day (typically Friday), you are entitled to either 150% of your hourly rate for hours worked, or a compensatory day off in lieu. The choice is typically agreed between employer and employee.
Is overtime calculated on basic salary or total salary?
Overtime is calculated on your basic salary only. Housing, transport, phone, and other allowances are excluded from the overtime calculation.
Can my employer force me to work overtime?
Employers can require overtime in certain circumstances, but it cannot exceed 2 hours per day. Employees cannot be regularly forced to work excessive overtime. If overtime is required, it must be compensated at the appropriate rate.
Do part-time employees get overtime?
Part-time employees are entitled to overtime pay when they work beyond the hours specified in their employment contract. The same overtime rates (125% and 150%) apply.
Are managers exempt from overtime?
Senior managers and employees in supervisory positions may be exempt from overtime provisions if specified in their employment contract. However, this must be clearly stated and agreed upon.
How are working hours calculated during Ramadan?
During Ramadan, working hours for Muslim employees are reduced to 6 hours per day. Any work beyond 6 hours during Ramadan counts as overtime and is paid at the applicable overtime rate.
