Getting the termination letter is bad enough. Working out what happens to your income next should not be a second shock. If you have been paying into ILOE, the UAE's mandatory unemployment insurance, there is money owed to you, and the rules are clearer than most people expect.
This guide covers the payout side only: who can claim, how the 60% formula works with real numbers, how long payments last, and the exact moments they stop. For premiums, renewal and fines, read our ILOE renewal guide. And one thing first: the clock to claim is 30 days.
Who qualifies to claim
The scheme pays out when the job loss was not your choice. You need all of the following:
- At least 12 consecutive months of ILOE subscription before you lost your job
- Premiums paid on time throughout that period
- Termination by the employer, not resignation
- No dismissal for disciplinary reasons, no absconding complaint against you, and lawful presence in the UAE at the time of the claim
Resigning, even under pressure, rules you out. Job loss caused by a strike is excluded too. If you believe your dismissal was unfair, that is a separate matter for MOHRE; our guide to redundancy and termination compensation explains what you are owed on top of ILOE.
How much you get
Compensation is 60% of your average monthly basic salary over the six months before the job loss. Basic only: housing, transport and other allowances do not count. The result is capped by your category:
- Category A (basic salary of AED 16,000 or less): maximum AED 10,000 a month
- Category B (basic salary above AED 16,000): maximum AED 20,000 a month
Some worked examples:
- Basic salary AED 12,000: 60% is AED 7,200 a month
- Basic salary AED 25,000: 60% is AED 15,000 a month, under the Category B cap, so you receive the full AED 15,000
- Basic salary AED 40,000: 60% would be AED 24,000, so the AED 20,000 cap applies
In practice the Category A cap almost never bites, because 60% of AED 16,000 is only AED 9,600. The Category B cap starts to matter once your basic salary passes roughly AED 33,300.
How long the payments last
Each claim pays for a maximum of three consecutive months. That is a ceiling, not a promise: payments end earlier if any of the triggers below happen first.
There is also a lifetime limit of 12 monthly payments across all your ILOE subscriptions and claims in the UAE. Months claimed with an earlier employer count against the total.
The five events that stop your payout
Payments end on whichever of these comes first:
- You reach three months on the current claim. The per-claim ceiling.
- You hit the 12-month lifetime maximum across every claim you have ever made under the scheme.
- You start a new job. Compensation is for the gap, not a top-up on a new salary.
- You leave the UAE. The benefit is tied to looking for work here.
- Death of the insured person. Cover ends from the date of death.
The 30-day deadline and what to do next
File your claim within 30 days of your contract ending. If the termination is tied up in a labour dispute, the 30 days run from the date it is resolved. Miss the window and the claim is gone, however many years of premiums you paid.
File through the official ILOE portal or app with your Emirates ID, and keep your termination letter and final salary slips to hand.
Then treat the three months as a funded job search, not a break. Check your visa cancellation grace period, get your CV into the format UAE recruiters expect, and start applying in week one. The fastest way to make the payout irrelevant is a signed offer.
Key takeaway
ILOE pays 60% of your average basic salary, capped at AED 10,000 or AED 20,000 a month by category, for up to three months per claim, and stops the moment you start a new job or leave the UAE. Claim within 30 days of termination or you lose it.
FAQ
How long does ILOE pay unemployment compensation?
Up to three consecutive months per claim, subject to a lifetime maximum of 12 monthly payments across all your subscriptions in the UAE. Payments stop earlier if you find a job or leave the country.
Does ILOE pay if I resign?
No. The scheme covers involuntary loss of employment only. Resignation, disciplinary dismissal, absconding and job loss caused by a strike are all excluded.
What is the ILOE maximum compensation per month?
AED 10,000 a month for Category A (basic salary of AED 16,000 or less) and AED 20,000 a month for Category B (basic salary above AED 16,000). Within those caps you receive 60% of your average basic salary.
Is ILOE calculated on basic salary or total salary?
Basic salary only. Allowances for housing, transport and similar are not included in the calculation.
What happens to my ILOE claim if I get a new job?
Payments stop when you start the new job. You keep what was paid for the months you were unemployed, and unused months of the lifetime limit stay available for a future claim.
