You came to the UAE on a visit visa to find a job, the interviews are going well, and the expiry date is suddenly close. The good news: most visit visas can be extended from inside the country, and a job offer lets you switch status without a trip abroad. Here is what can be extended, what it costs, and what to do if extension is not an option.

## Which visit visas can be extended, and for how long

ICP sets the limits, and they apply as a total across all extensions, not per extension:

- **Tourist visa:** can be extended once or several times, up to **120 days in total**.
- **Visit to a relative or friend:** up to **180 days in total**.
- **Job exploration or business set-up visa:** up to **180 days in total**.
- **Medical treatment and study or training visas:** up to 180 days in total.
- **14-day visas for certain nationalities:** one extension for the same period.

Some entry permits cannot be extended at all, including permits for border areas, truck drivers, tourist ship and pleasure boat crews, and, per ICP, the 60-day visas issued to certain nationalities. The visa type is shown on the visa and in the ICP or GDRFA app. Our [UAE visa types guide](/knowledge-hub/visa-immigration/uae-visa-types-2026-complete-guide) explains the categories.

## Who applies, and through which channel

You usually cannot extend a visit visa by yourself. **The sponsor that issued it files the extension**:

- **Tourist visa from a travel agency, hotel or airline package:** that tourism company applies. Contact them early.
- **Visa sponsored by a relative or friend:** your sponsor applies through their own account.
- **Job exploration visa:** you or the issuing entity applies, depending on how it was issued.

The channel depends on the emirate that issued the visa:

- **Dubai-issued visas:** GDRFA Dubai website or app (24/7, log in with UAE Pass), or any Amer centre. GDRFA quotes 48 hours processing.
- **Other emirates:** ICP smart services website or ICP app, or a licensed typing centre.

Apply before the expiry date. An extension filed after expiry still means fines for the days you were out of status.

## What an extension costs in 2026

Fees differ by channel and emirate, so check the live service page before paying.

**ICP (published fees):**
- Application fee: AED 100
- Standard extension fee: AED 500
- 14-day visa extension: AED 250

**GDRFA Dubai (tourist and relative visit visa extensions):**
- Extension fee: AED 600, plus 5% VAT
- If you are inside the country: Knowledge Dirham AED 10, Innovation Dirham AED 10, and an inside-country fee of AED 500

**Worked example, Dubai tourist visa, applicant inside the UAE:** AED 600 + AED 30 VAT + AED 10 + AED 10 + AED 500 = **AED 1,150** in government fees. Travel agencies and typing centres add their own service charges on top, which vary, so ask for a full quote in writing.

## If you overstay: the fines

ICP lists a single overstay fine of **AED 50 per day** for staying past the permitted period on any entry visa or residence permit. A three-week overstay is AED 1,050, close to the cost of a Dubai extension.

Do not count on a grace period after a visit visa expires. Rules have changed several times and practice varies, so treat the expiry date as the last legal day. Our [overstay fines guide](/knowledge-hub/visa-immigration/uae-overstay-fines-guide) covers how to check and pay what you owe.

## Better than extending: change status

If your job search is turning into offers, an extension may not be the right move.

- **Got an offer?** Your employer applies for your work permit and residence visa, then files a **status change** so you never leave the country. GDRFA lists its status amendment at AED 500 plus AED 20 in dirham charges, and employers normally cover it. See our [employment visa process guide](/knowledge-hub/visa-immigration/uae-employment-visa-process-2026) for the steps.
- **Still searching?** A job seeker visa gives you up to 180 days with no sponsor. Eligibility and fees are covered in our [UAE job seeker visa guide](/knowledge-hub/visa-immigration/uae-job-seeker-visa-guide).

Use the remaining days to apply to live roles on [JobXDubai](/jobs).

## The exit and re-entry option

If you cannot extend (you have hit the 120 or 180-day cap, or the visa type is non-extendable), you can leave the UAE and come back on a new visa. Clear any fines first and get the new visa approved before you fly. Re-entry is never guaranteed, so a status change from inside the country is the safer route once you have an offer.

## Key takeaway

Tourist visas can be extended to 120 days in total and job exploration or family visit visas to 180 days, but the sponsor files it and it must be done before expiry. In Dubai expect about AED 1,150 in government fees from inside the country. Overstaying costs AED 50 a day, and a job offer lets you change status without leaving.

## FAQ

### Can I extend my UAE tourist visa myself?

Usually not. The agency, hotel, airline or person that sponsored the visa files it. On a job exploration visa, check the visa record in the ICP or GDRFA app to see who issued it, and extend through that channel.

### How long can I stay in the UAE on extensions?

Up to 120 days in total on a tourist visa and up to 180 days in total on a visit-a-relative or job exploration visa, counting the original period. Some visas, such as certain 60-day nationality-based visas, cannot be extended.

### How much does a UAE visa extension cost in 2026?

ICP lists AED 100 to apply plus AED 500 for a standard extension. GDRFA Dubai charges AED 600 plus VAT, with another AED 520 in charges if you are inside the country. Agents and typing centres add service fees.

### What is the fine for overstaying a visit visa?

AED 50 per day, the same rate for every visa type. Pay it through ICP, GDRFA, an Amer centre or at the airport when leaving.

### Can I change my visit visa to a work visa without leaving the UAE?

Yes. Once an employer issues your work permit and visa, they file a status change inside the country, and any overstay fines are settled as part of it.
