UAE Residence Visa Cancellation: A Guide for Expats

Last Updated on July 10, 2024 by Vadim

Leaving the UAE for good? Don’t forget to cancel your residence visa properly to avoid future complications.

As an expat, it’s crucial to understand the visa cancellation process to ensure a smooth transition. The UAE Digital Government has issued an advisory to expats on the importance of cancelling their residence visa when leaving the country permanently.

Why Cancel Your UAE Residence Visa?

Failing to cancel your residence visa can result in complications if you want to return to the UAE in the future. The UAE Digital Government emphasizes that the residence visa must be cancelled officially to avoid any issues.

Who Can Cancel Your Residence Visa?

Normally, only the sponsor can cancel your residence visa. You cannot process the application on your own. If you’re an expat sponsored by a family member or employer, they must cancel your visa.

What Happens If I Don’t Cancel My Visa?

If you don’t cancel your visa and more than six months have passed since you exited the country, your residence visa will be automatically cancelled by default. If you want to return to the UAE after this time, you’ll need to seek permission from the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security) and may require additional paperwork and payments.

What Companies Must Do

Companies must cancel an employment visa of their employee by approaching the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) with an application to cancel the employee’s labour contract and labour card. The employee must also sign this application. Then, the employer should apply to ICP for visa cancellation.

What About Individuals Who Are Sponsors?

Individuals sponsoring their spouse, children, and other dependents must cancel their dependents’ visas before they cancel their own visa. This normally costs around Dh110 to cancel the visa.

How to Apply for Visa Cancellation

You can submit a request to cancel residency through:

  • ICP-approved printing offices (typing centres or business service centres)
  • Electronically through platforms provided by the authorities concerned with issuing residence visas (such as the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in their emirate)
  • Through the ICP’s electronic channels, such as the Authority’s website and smart app (UAEICP) on Google Play and App Store platforms.

Key Takeaway

Properly cancelling your UAE residence visa is crucial to avoid future complications. Ensure you understand the procedures, requirements, and consequences of not cancelling your visa. By following this guide, you can ensure a smooth transition and avoid any potential issues when leaving the UAE.
